I've had enough of the pink slime bullshit.

I bet 8 out of 10 of the people out there who go 'eeewwwww sllliimmee!!' don't even know why it's bad and assume it's because it's pink and slimy.

First of all, what colour is meat? It's usually a shade of red right? 'White' meat like chicken has a very light pinkish hue, while 'red' meats like beef are dark red, leaning towards brown.

Say you wanna make some meaty paste on your own. What colour is minced meat? Pink-red right? Ok, anyway, so you put into your blender and give it a long whirl in your blender until it becomes soft and fluffy, like a paste.

What colour is it gonna be?

See, the issue with pink slime is how it was processed, not because it looks disgusting. 

Comeon lah, even prawn paste is pink/red. Depending on how finely ground it is, it even has thousands of beady little eyes starring back at you. Now, that's creepy.

During processing of pink slime, ammonia gas is used to kill the bacteria. The problem is that the meat is wet and ammonia, in the presence of water, becomes ammonium hydroxide, which is an active ingredient in cleaning agents. And then they use other chemicals to change it's colour.

That's the problem.

Another issue with the noise made from this news is why such processes are allowed in the first place?

It may be low quality scraps but you know what? I'm alright with low quality scraps. Which one of us (vegetarians no included), haven't licked the last delicious morsels of ribs before? It's still meat and it can still feed, but, as above, it's how its processed that's the problem. It's like dousing foods in detergent. The lemon flavour isn't going to make it safer. Couldn't find any details about the food colourings but needless to say, the less additives in food, the better.

So it's not that it's pink and slimish. It's because it's riddled with stuff that isn't fit for human consumption.

I just got a reply from Mcdonalds Singapore. The beef used locally are sourced from AVA approved Australian sources and they have never used any products that have been treated by Ammonium before.

So, please don't worry about pink slim in Mcdonalds Singapore ok? If you reeeeaaallly want to be safe, avoid processed beef products from the USA when shopping at supermarkets.
